3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

INCI Name: 3-O-Ethyl-Ascorbic Acid

Purposes: Skin-Conditioning Agent

This derivation of Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is produced by chemically modifying Vitamin C. This change in the molecular structure improves the compounds transportability through the skin. Because Ascorbic Acid is a relatively unstable compound, this change is useful in prolonging the efficacy of Vitamin C's benefits. Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is able to retain the benefits of Vitamin C because it actually changes back to Ascorbic Acid in the body. This material is efficient at preventing pigmentation as a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Interestingly, it even has been shown to have some additional benefits to regular Ascorbic Acid, which include the promotion of nerve cell growth and the reduction of chemotherapeutic related cell damage.
