Calcium Lactate

Calcium Lactate

INCI Name: Calcium Lactate

Purposes: Astringent , Buffering Agent , Keratolyic

Calcium Lactate is the calcium salt of lactic acid. The salts of lactic acid are used in cosmetics and personal care products as astringents, buffering agents, and keratolyic agents. Lactic acid is a naturally occurring compound that belongs to a class of acids called Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). Various salts of lactic acid are used in personal care products, but they are generally used to promote exfoliation. Lactic acid is a larger molecule than glycolic acid, so it penetrates the skin less effectively. This makes it more gentle, but a little less effective.

A study from 1996 compared a 5% and a 12% lactic acid treatment of the skin. The higher concentration allowed for more deep exfoliation into the dermis layer of the skin. Aside from exfoliation, it also had moisturizing properties.
